Four Seasons, No Sticks The inspiration for this work was the seasonal connection to the trees; how our relationship to the natural world waxes and wanes depending on the season. When we feel closely woven into the natural world, we can feel and smell the trees, their leaves, barks and roots; we have a sense of our place in the world. It contains us. We know where we belong. Ash boiled willow and bark and blue waxed linen thread are reminiscent of the salmon skin under blue river and fish nets of the summer. Natural willow bark is reminiscent of the autumn browns as color fades and trees recede in the dark.Spruce root random weave is reminiscent of the starkness of winter and the random trails through the snow.Alder Bark and blush waxed linen thread is reminiscent of bright sun reflected on silver bark in the spring. All of this material is gathered in the forgotten, untidy and marginal spaces like ditches and overgrown lots. The idea this material is useful helps us to see the landscape in a new way. After a weekend workshop over 20 years ago with Yukon basket maker Sheila Alexandrovich, I got hooked on the art of basket weaving. I’ve worked primarily in the stake and stand tradition with wild Yukon willow. I’ve studied under Washington basket maker Katherine Lewis in the Irish traditions as well as under Scottish and English basket makers Catherine Davis and Pascal Carr in the Scottish traditions. Most recently I’ve studied under west coast Canadian basket maker Joan Carrigan using cedar and willow bark and waxed linen thread. I’ve been gifted knowledge of Dawson City area trees and plant fibres by knowledge holders in the community. Arts markets in Dawson City. [email protected] |

Mixed Media: Newsprint, Mylar Map, Acrylic, Polymer Clay, Yukon river driftwood, Takhini River pebbles, Tagish River sand and gravel
Drawing on teachings of my father, this mixed media piece examines the enchantment of wild and peculiar places. Working with natural and human-made elements I endeavor to evoke the essence of quiet magic that flourishes in the North, and the raven winged echo of timeless allure of rivers and mountains.

Lillian Loponen Creative Muse at Play I was inspired by the freedom of exploring molding paste slapped on canvas, like butter slapped on toast, and then randomly playing with the palette knife to make relief-like marks on the canvas, like sculpture artists who work in stone sometimes wait for the surfacing of an image. A symbiotic relationship develops between the artist and the stone. With that thought, I felt akin to this type of textural painting, a surprise and excitement of what showed up! The painted portion and acrylic colours emerged making random choices using some of the watercolour techniques. Like reading clouds in the summer, creative imagination and muse made time to play. 1st year of BFA. Through Yukon College and over a ten-year period, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator and InDesign became a focus for graphic design and tabletop publishing on a small scale. Loponen has been in the art world for 40 years, She has had a number of career options but has always come back to the creative process. She spent a number of phases in her early years experimenting with other creative art forms, but her passion for watercolours has always been the strongest. She has received a number of awards and recognition including being flown to Vancouver to saw a few words to the Royal couple and the Prime Minister on their tour to Immigrant Services Society of BC. Colours of the Canyon, 2018-05-08
My inspiration to create this work was the beautiful colours of Miles Canyon. I’ve always been drawn to the colours of the lichen, juniper the canyon walls themselves and, of course, the water. I choose to do an impression of the canyon as I wanted to focus on colours that invoke the sense of peacefulness I feel when I spend time in the canyon area.
Acrylic with Resin
I have been interested in art most of my life. In the past seven years, I have periodically taken classes and instruction through Emma Barr, as well as attending the Summer Art Series at Red Deer College in the summer of 2017. As my interest in art has grown, I have started informally studying the work of the Group of Seven, Impressionists, and some of today’s artists who paint impressionist and /or abstract landscapes.
I was born and raised in the Northwest Territories and have lived in the Yukon for the past 27 years. Like many Northerners, I am drawn to nature and the beautiful landscapes that abound in the Yukon.

My Cabin life has inspired me to draw and paint as well as felt old time objects from this life style. I used acrylic on canvas, my colour choice is vibrant, full of energy like the light in our small cabin. I just spent 2 weeks painting and drawing while staying at our cabin which is remotely located on the Stuart River above Mayo.
I attended Santa Barbara City College, and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in the 60’s. Since then I take the occasional classes but mostly am self-taught.
My Art is available at Arts Underground since the 80’s. Also at Midnight Sun Coffee Shop, and seasonally in Dawson and in Johnson’s Crossing Lodge.

Neil Graham Trifid Nebula This is an oil painting. It came about because I was fascinated by the images from the Hubble Space Telescope and I wanted to flout people in these starscapes. The people are strangley dressed and it is life affirming, the way they are in a sea of stars and doing things that come naturally to humans. I wanted to illustrate the common place and desire. I am self-taught and have been practising my art for over thirty years. 867-668-7404 [email protected] |

Meshell Melvin From the Deep, Sedna rises to defend the Arctic Magazine Collage on Canvas This image emerges from my rage and despair over the condition of our planet, and for those who would continue to perpetuate their destructive plundering unabated. My deepest fear is that we lose our Arctic, our permafrost and our ice. And so I invoke Sedna, the Great Mother of the circumpolar north, to rise from her underwater deep. To rise and defend the Arctic, and in so doing save our planet. I have a combined honours degree, in Visual Art and English Literature, though since my graduation my practice and my teaching have informed all that I do. Marten Berkman As a digital artist, I wanted to do something analogue. This is my first drawing in decades. I drew stones in water from my memory and imagination, planted by the lithic beauty I have found in so many Yukon Rivers and streams. I drew at a young age and won a competition that gave me entrance into art classes. I also studied studio art in university before going into photo and film. My work I available at YA@W www.martenberkman.com |

Jackie Dowell-Irvine The inspiration for Jackie's painting came from our lovely fall colours. The Yukon has a fleeting and glorious fall. She enjoys the play of reds, golds, oranges and ochres. When the cool snow hits the mountain tops it increases the drama and vividness of these beautiful warm colours. She loves to highlight the play of colour in many of her works as she has in this work of the Tombstone area.

Gloria Andison On a Clear Day The Ogilvie Tombstone Mountains fascinate me. The painting is a composite of several different photos depicting various areas in Yukon- it is not meant to represent any one place. I used acrylics in colours of our Yukon summer. The title is from “On a clear day, you can see forever.” I am self-taught, starting with ceramics and gradually moving on to working with acrylics on canvas and more recently, watercolours. My art is available directly from me at my home studio as well as Arts Underground and Midnight Sun Gallery & Gifts. #26 Cathy Routledge Under the Snow I painted this piece in Europe, far from the clear and cold and my northern home. It could be the edge of a muskeg swamp, along a ridge, or even the side of the highway as the light fades at the end of the day. The palette is reminiscent of winters across the northland with cold blues, crisp whites, low light and long shadows. Or are those shadows and echo of summer? Maybe. It’s a wet-in-wet watercolour, painted with a lot of water. The technique really does create the painting and the magic is in leaving it alone to do its thing. I’m self-taught and have been fortunate to study and paint with some really fantastic international artists. My work is available at Art Underground, Coachella Valley Watercolor Society, shows and directly from me. [email protected] Fb Cathy Routledge Water color Art cathyroutledgearts.wordpress.com |

Amelia Merhar Mood Rabbit I often do performance or installation art so I had to alter for this event. Using the Yukon Guide to Fur-Bearing Animals , I tested out mood rings for eye on several animals, the Mood Rabbit (actually a Snowshoe Hare) was the most striking. The rings still change colour with temperature so depending on where you place this, this work can change. …A bit about the environment, a bit about body language, a bit about emotions in a lighthearted way: Mood Rabbit! Amelia is self-taught. She has been creating in various mediums for 18 years. Her art is available at arts festivals and online. [email protected] ameliamerhar.com |

Weaving into Spring
Medium: wool & Cotton yarn, poplar.
This piece is inspired by Spring in Yukon. Weaving is a beautifully symbolic activity: pieces of yarn are merged into colours & shapes, in this case reminiscent of the changing landscape as it enters a new season. Weaving individual strands into a whole, a new visual reality is created. I like to think that we can do this with life’s at times seemingly disparate pieces. The poplar branch was found in a downtown alley with fresh potent spring buds….
I hold a BFA in Intermedia/Cyberarts from Concordia University and a Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy from the Kutenai Art Therapy Insitute.
My art, at this point, is aviailable mostly just in my head!

Linda Leon Return Salmon return to where they begin. The life cycle is repeated. “return” is an oil painting. I love the red colour. It is also a colour that is more luscious in the medium of oil than in any other kind of paint. Red is what Chinook salmon turn to when spawning. Red is particularly noticeable at the fish ladders against the blue green of the water in the Yukon River. Another reason to love August! I studied visual arts at the School of Fine Arts at University of Manitoba, graduating 1974. I have always made art. But late I life, I became involved in theatre designer and scenic artist. So for over 30 years I followed two paths. The two disciplines enhanced each other. Yukon is an inspiring place. My art practice has flourished here. It isn’t just the natural world that is inspiring. The creative community here is also nourishing. My work is available at Yukon Artists @ Work. Golden Slumbers
I wanted to create a piece of work that wouldn’t look like my usual work and I have been exploring lettering in my art practice over the last year. I have been creating lettering works mostly on watercolour paper with gouache paint. Art Anonymous seemed like the perfect opportunity to try it out with paint on canvas. For the most part, the lettering that I’ve been doing have been music lyrics. I have always had a profound connection to music, and I thought lettering music lyrics would be a way to incorporate both my love of music and art. I chose this lyric from the Beatles song Golden Slumbers. It is a line that really reflects how I want to live my life and I think it’s a great message in a world that today seems a bit lacking in love. I hope this piece will bring joy into someone’s life. It was a joy to make it!
This work is created with acrylic paint and an acrylic pen for fine lines. I chose to make this piece with a palette of happy, joyful colours and I wanted to define the message of love with a heart image at the bottom of the piece. I really wanted the heart to look more like a piece of jewelry rather than the traditional heart image. I think I accomplished that with the yellows that I chose.
My paintings are abstract interpretations of Yukon landscapes and places. I work in acrylics, watercolours, and oil paints. Using intense colour combinations in all my artworks is a way for me to express how I feel about living in the Yukon and helps me define the wildness of this place in my own way.
As an illustrator, and a lover of colour, I have self-published a colouring book “Colour the Yukon” and I am currently working on volume two inspired by unique houses in Whitehorse. I am also an avid sketchbook user.
My studio practice is operated out of my home in Whitehorse and I am inspired by the trails and trees that surround it. My family and I spend our summers camping and hiking around the Yukon and our winters fishing and snowshoeing. I am a long time Yukoner, so I’m grateful to be able to share all my childhood experiences with my own kids. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Shauna Jones Cultural Landscape Narrative I am interested in how our brains create a narrative where one might or might not naturally be. These two objects-a yellow lynx skull and an ancient dehydrated carrots can-are joined together and now have a story. I also like how it seems as if the skull now has a neck of someone’s missed carrot dinner. The medium is acrylic on canvas. Shauna is self-taught, Her work is available by request. She works mostly in scenic painting and murals. [email protected] |

Title Rosehip Jelly
This piece was painted in the cool of Autumn when rose hips hung plump and red from the wild rose bushes and what remained of their leaves glowed brilliant yellow amongst the red fireweed. The air was cool with an underlying scent of wood smoke. Around the corner was winter snow. But, the rose hips were a last opportunity to draw outside and tasted delicious.
The piece was done in acrylic paint with the addition of coloured pencil and was based on a small study done in watercolour paint. Ti was originally painted in the woods near Johnson Crossing, but could be anywhere in the Yukon.
Martha Jane Ritchie lives and works in Haines Junciton. She received her art diploma, with honours, from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancovuer BC. Martha works primaril as a printmaker, but also enjoys other mediums.
Available at Yukon artist at work, Arts UDNerground, The Dancing moose in Dawson City, Pain Mountain Pottery ( Haines Junction), Inky fingers Studio and Gallery ( Haines Junction) and from June to September at the Artists Guild Gallery in the basement of the lgo church in Haines Junction. Or from the artist.

Butterfly Spirit This is a Dirty Pour Acrylic Piece. I never know with dirty pours what result to expect, but this reminded me of a butterfly just coming out of its cocoon and stretching its wings for the first time. This is acrylic on canvas. After a long winter, I was craving something green and summery to paint. Althoguht the hummingbird is not a calm bird but even it has its moments of calm. So this little bird is taking a moment to hang out on a salmon berry bush… maybe to contemplate its next move.
I have a deep connection with nature and nearly all of my artwork reflects this element, even my whimsy and fantasy art.
I am a self-taught artist. I’ve been painting and drawing since I was a wee child.
My works is available at Arts Underground.

Lookout (the)
This was the memory of a little river deep in the Yukon. There was a natural lookout where we spent a few days that guided my paintbrush.
Emerging from the forest where we felt engulfed, the lookout was a place full of light and colours where anything could happen. A caribou might cross. A sasquatch might wander by. Medium: Acrylic and gouache on canvas.
Gabrielle was the winning entry for the 2017-18 Northwestel phone directory competition. “Sandpiper Claim at Dusk” is featured on the cover.
Gabrielle is a self-taught painter. Four acrylic paintings are currently on display at the Whitehorse General Hospital in the Specialist’s Clinic and are for sale. Otherwise please contact the artist.

Gold Dust Dreams
This piece is a textured multi-media collage made with photos, sharpie markers, clear round glass gems and fabric flowers. I was inspired to use some of the photos to build a gold rush reverie around the iconic image of the Klondike dance hall girl Mae Field. The images surrounding her speak of a daydream she might have had about days gone by, after leaving the Yukon. The blues, purples, greys and gold swirling around her provide a dreamy feel, and mirror the colours in the photos. The glass gems provide texture as do the flowers on Mae’s Dress which highlight her as the focal point of the piece.
Kim is self-taught. She does not market her art but she makes it for gifts and therapy!
She is a counsellor by day and often uses art in her practice to help clients express themselves and work through challenges.

Landscape Menagerie
For a time now I have been challenging myself with the boundaries of how I see landscape, with an eye to looking beyond the obvious features to find the surprise of what else might also be there. In this case, I’ve used mountains as a simple backdrop for an exotic array of richly imaging and colourfully patterned wildlife which can alternately be seen to blend or stand out.
While the majority of this work is done in acrylics, for some of the background detailing I used coloured ink, which is a crossover method of mixing media that I commonly employ.
Originally from Montreal, I began to love drawing and design early in school. I graduated in 1971 with a prize for my art.
While never in pursuit of an Art Degree, I attended the following schools:
Montreal Museum School of Fine Art, Sheridan College, Ont, Sir Sandford Fleming College, Ont
I dabbled in programming, from life drawing, painting, animation, architectural design, ceramics and sculpture. Over time my practice has expanded to include collage, needle felting, print making, oil pastels and other mixed media. As a member of the Yukon Arts Society since 2000, I have participated in various small group shows.

I have many reference pictures of Gray Jays from camping and hiking trips and wanted to paint one for a while. I always expect a visit from a gray jay when in nature. I love their bold personalities and presence. Completed in acrylic paint and placed in the sky because I always feel like they are watching.
Dee has an art & biology degree with a specialty in scientific illustration. Her work is available at YA@W, Arts Underground and online.

Suzanne Paleczny Still life with Bear Skull Oil on Canvas This is a still life painting of things around my house and in my fridge. I find the square canvas compositionally, so I approached the scene from a low viewpoint with a somewhat foreshortened view of the skull. Vancouver is very inspiring and offers wonderful scenery. This is my own photo picture edited and printed on cotton, then painted and finally quilted over organza.
I graduated in textile design. A few workshops encouraged me to develop my quilting skills and alter quilting art and multi-media processes. I’m self-educated and fell everything is worth trying out.

SS Klondike Gold Panner
I was inspired by the Goldrush history of the Yukon when creating this acrylic painting. I wanted to highlight the Whitehorse Ragin Rapids beneath the SS Klondike Sternwheeler so I created White horses as rapids. To honour the Yukon’s mining history I painted a gold panner with a pan filled with gold nuggets emerging from the sternwheeler’s smoke stack.
Growing up on the West Coast, my artistic style is inspired by 2 of my favourite types of at: Frist Nations & graffiti.
I received a diploma of fine arts from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and I then attended Emily Carr University for a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts.

Yukon Afternoon
I was inspired by the vast and beautiful Yukon landscape when creating this acrylic artwork. I wanted to highlight the amazing aurora borealis in the sky and the stunning landscape of the Yukon. When I think about the Yukon this is the image that comes to mind: outdoor activities, nature, wildlife and an amazing vast mountain range/landscape: truly “larger than life”

Standing on clear ice
Looking at life beneath
-So much we remain unaware of
I am not a painter but I enjoy painting. There was a recent winter when the lake ice froze clear and you could walk on top of meters of water. You could still see the stones in the lake bed. Most of my work in clay is about transition and connection-this is an attempt to do the same in a 2D format.
Sandra graduated from Emily Carr with a degree of distinction . She is an art educator and collaborator. She is now self-employed as a sculptor and curator.

Dennis Shorty Storyteller I haven’t done a mask out of leather before so this is a e medium for me. I am inspired by the natural colours and the fur, it represents my grandfather. It is made of deer hide from Germany, recycled copper from Ross River and Polar bear fur. A long time ago, my grandfather/parents went for a walk right up to where they saw polar bear and they ate a muskox. It is a story my grandmother told me a long time ago. I am a self–taught artist but also learned from my grandfather and father by watching them creating useable art. [email protected] cell 867-335-3355 Social media: Dennis Shorty Fine Art |
